NBR vs EPDM vs HNBR: How to Select the Right Plate Heat Exchanger Gasket
Choosing an elastomer gasket is a material compatibility decision, not simply a question of price or temperature rating.
NBR, EPDM and HNBR are widely recognized gasket material families, but their behavior differs under water, oil, chemical exposure and repeated thermal cycling.
For industrial purchasing, the correct material must also fit the plate geometry and sealing groove of the exact exchanger.

Why Gasket Compound Selection Matters
The gasket is exposed to the process fluid and can experience temperature changes, compression stresses and cleaning chemicals.
A compound selected without sufficient service information may swell, harden, lose elasticity or otherwise become unsuitable for its sealing duty.
Buyers should consider the entire duty cycle, including operating, shutdown, cleaning and storage conditions.
NBR, EPDM and HNBR: Material Comparison
| Material Family | Typical Evaluation Area | Important Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| NBR | Selected oil-related and compatible hydrocarbon services | Temperature capability and chemical resistance depend on the compound |
| EPDM | Compatible water-based fluids and selected aqueous chemical duties | Generally unsuitable for petroleum-oil exposure unless a specific approved formulation says otherwise |
| HNBR | Selected applications requiring properties beyond conventional NBR formulations | Must be checked against fluid chemistry, temperature and gasket design |
NBR: Evaluate Oil Compatibility
Nitrile rubber is frequently considered where suitable oils or oil-containing process liquids are involved.
However, oil compatibility cannot be generalized to every hydrocarbon or solvent mixture. The exact formulation and service temperature need verification.
EPDM: Review Water-Based Services
EPDM compounds are often evaluated for appropriate heating-water, cooling-water and certain glycol-based services.
Actual compatibility depends on additives, fluid concentration, operating conditions and the selected elastomer grade.
HNBR: Review the Complete Operating Envelope
Hydrogenated nitrile rubber may be relevant where the specified service requires a different property balance from conventional NBR.
Its use still requires documented compatibility with the actual process medium and approved operating conditions.
Five Questions Before Ordering Replacement Gaskets
The purchasing team should establish the following information before deciding on a compound:
- What is the exact process fluid composition and concentration?
- Which temperatures occur during normal operation, startup and cleaning?
- Does the process contain oil, solvents or aggressive additives?
- Which gasket profile and retention method does the plate require?
- Are material records or specific approvals required for the project?

Why the Correct Material Can Still Be the Wrong Gasket
A chemically suitable elastomer cannot seal the equipment correctly if its profile does not match the plate groove.
Clip-on retention features, gasket ports, groove depth and plate orientation must match the selected exchanger model.
For a replacement enquiry, submit the equipment nameplate, gasket sample photographs, material information and required quantity.

1. Is EPDM always better than NBR for hot water?
No. The actual compound, operating temperature and fluid chemistry must be verified.
2. Can HNBR directly replace NBR?
Only after confirming the exact profile, retention features, mechanical requirements and chemical suitability.
3. Can gasket color identify its material?
No. Color is not a reliable certification of elastomer composition or service rating.
4. Can one material handle all cleaning chemicals?
No. Cleaning exposure must be checked against the specific compound and equipment requirements.
5. What is needed for a gasket material quotation?
Provide the exchanger model, gasket geometry, process medium, operating temperatures and required quantity.
